Peppers Martinborough Hotel - The Square, Martinborough

Superior Accommodation

Established in 1882, Peppers Martinborough Hotel stands at the heart of Martinborough, one of New Zealand's finest wine making regions, approximately one hour east of Wellington.

Martinborough Wine Village is also conveniently located on The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail, the new 380km scenic touring route linking the wine regions of Hawkes Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough.

A complete refurbishment in 1996 has recaptured the former colonial elegance of the hotel and it now offers sixteen individually designed rooms which open out either onto the private verandah or into the flower-filled courtyard. The nine upstairs (verandah) rooms have French doors opening onto a private verandah, where guests can take tea and refreshments in comfortable wicker planters' chairs. Seven garden rooms downstairs open onto the garden and can be used as either twin or double rooms. Each suite has its own black and white tiled bathroom with a deep claw-footed bath tub or shower, pedestal basin, fresh white towels and fine quality bed linen.

Diners can enjoy fine cuisine and outstanding wines in the bistrot, which spills out under the verandah onto the historic town square. In winter, a roaring open fire keeps pub-goers warm in the friendly bar, which houses a fine selection of historic pictures of Martinborough.

Location
Martinborough Wine Village is located in the Wairarapa at the southern end of the North Island. It is approximately one hour by road from the capital, Wellington. It is also a key destination on The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail – a 380km scenic touring route linking three leading wine regions – Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and Marlborough. These three regions are responsible for over 70% of New Zealand’s total wine production and most of the country’s best known labels can be found along the route.

By Road
Martinborough is 84km from Wellington via State Highways 2 and 53. It lies close to Masterton (43km), Palmerston North (151km), and Hawkes Bay (293km).

By Air
Martinborough can be reached by Wellington Airport (limited international and domestic flights), and Hood Aerodrome, Masterton (domestic only).

By Rail
Featherston Station is a mere 54 minutes from Wellington

Activities
Martinborough Wine Village has become one of New Zealand’s best food and wine destinations. Just one hour's drive from the capital city, Wellington, the village is a favourite weekend destination for those who feel a need to escape the city and discover a relaxed, country ambience that is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

The key attraction of Martinborough (apart from its high number of sunshine hours and low rainfall) is wine and all that goes with wine - tastings, buying, talking with winemakers, walking through vineyards and generally absorbing the atmosphere. But the scale of the town is perhaps its greatest advantage. Everything is boutique-scale. The big wine producers are absent. Visitors can park your car in The Square and walk to the vineyards. The nearest is only 10 minutes away.

Apart from wine-related activities, there are numerous leisure pursuits to enjoy such as golf at the picturesque course, tennis, trout fishing, horse trekking, canoeing, jet boating, visiting the colonial museum on The Square or just indulging in a little retail therapy at Martinborough Wine Centre. Perhaps the best way to spend a summer afternoon is a leisurely horse and carriage ride around the vineyards - a great way to taste and travel!
