Town & Country – 13 Days / 12 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE AUCKLAND:

Meet & greet on arrival at Auckland International Airport.
Transfer by private vehicle to your hotel in the “City of Sails”.


DAY 02: AUCKLAND / WAITOMO / ROTORUA:

Depart Auckland this morning and travel south along the motorway to the Bombay Hills and desend into the lush, green, dairy farming region of the Waikato Province, following the Waikato River for part of the way and on to the world famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. Take a guided tour through the Waitomo Glow worm caves and view staligmites, staligmites and thousands of tiny glow worms. Continue on to Rotorua via the prosperous town of Cambridge, well known for the many thoroughbred horse studs in the area which have produced some of the top race horses. Climb over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and arrive at the “Thermal Spa City” of Rotorua in the late afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or go for an Optional soak in the thermal waters of the Polynesian Spa. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.) Enjoy a Maori Hangi & Concert this evening.


DAY 03: ROTORUA:

Enjoy a ½ day morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers and to learn about Maori culture. Also visit the Rainbow Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. Return to your hotel. This afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a soak in a hot pool, a 4WD safari to Mt Tarawera, a scenic flight, a visit to the Museum, or perhaps wander around the city centre and do some shopping. (Please note that Optional activities mentioned above are not included in the tour costs.)


DAY 04: ROTORUA / TAUPO:

Check out of hotel and transfer from Rotorua to Taupo passing through some of the main forestry areas in the North Island, the Kaiangaroa Pinus Radiata Forest, with sightseeing en route including a visit to the Huka Falls on the Waikato River and to the Wairakei Geothermal Valley. Arrive at Taupo township situated on the lake shore at the northern end of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand and the same size as the island of the Republic of Singapore. Lake Taupo is a large extinct volcanic crater and site of one of the largest explosions on earth. The rest of the day is at leisure for relaxing or exploring on your own.


DAY 05: TAUPO / WELLINGTON:

Check out of hotel and depart Taupo for Wellington. Travel along the eastern shores of Lake Taupo before climbing over the Central Volcanic Plateau and passing by the Tongariro National Park, home to the active volcanoes of Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Continue on via Waiouru, Taihape and Bulls and follow the west coast of the North Island south to the "Capital City" of Wellington. Check in to hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to relax or explore this vibrant city on your own. The main restaurant and entertainment area is very centrally located in Courtenay Place and also nearby to the Waterfront which is also very popular in the evenings.


DAY 06: WELLINGTON:

Enjoy a ½ day sightseeing tour of the “Capital City” this morning including Parliament Buildings, Wellington Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Oriental Bay and a panoramic view from the top of Mount Victoria overlooking the city and harbour towards the Hutt Valley to the North, and South out across Wellington Airport to Cook Strait and the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or perhaps to visit Te Papa – The Museum of New Zealand. (Optional costs not included in tour costs.)


DAY 07: WELLINGTON / PICTON / CHRISTCHURCH:

Transfer from your hotel to the Wellington Ferry Terminal and board the Inter-Island ferry to Picton in the South Island. Sail out of Wellington Harbour and into the Cook Strait and across to the Marlborough Sounds. Cruise through the scenic Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton. Here board the Tranz Coastal train to Christchurch via Kaikoura and the picturesque Kaikoura Coast. Arrive in Christchurch in the early evening and transfer from the Christchurch Railway Station to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps to explore some of the many bars and restaurants in the central city area.


DAY 08: CHRISTCHURCH / GREYMOUTH / FOX GLACIER:

Transfer from your hotel to the Christchurch Railway Station and board the Tranz Alpine Express for a scenic rail journey across the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth. Board your coach for the continuation of your journey south to Fox Glacier via Franz Josef Glacier. Pass through the small settlements of Hokitika, Ross and Hari Hari and several beautiful lakes surrounded by native bush en route before arriving at Franz Josef Glacier and continuing on to Fox Glacier. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps take a walk to the Westland National Park Visitor Centre and learn more about the glaciers which dominate this region of the South Island.


DAY 09: FOX GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN:

Transfer to Queenstown this morning traveling through the small settlement of Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bush clad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Enter the Otago Province and on to the small settlement of Makarora opposite the boundary of the Mount Aspiring National Park. Follow the shores of Lakes Wanaka & Hawea before passing the fruitgrowing area around Cromwell and through the scenic Kawarau Gorge to picturesque Queenstown nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.


DAY 10: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day excursion to Milford Sound. Travel alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with a gradient of 1:10, and view stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. View waterfalls, dolphins, seals, and maybe a few penguins as well as the stunning scenery. Return to Queenstown and arrive in the early evening. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax, or perhaps take a walk around the town centre with its many bars, cafes and restaurants to chose from.


DAY 11: QUEENSTOWN:

Today is a free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as Jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, luge, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. (Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.) Enjoy your time in beautiful Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand.


DAY 12: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH:

Depart Queenstown this morning and travel through the Kawarau Gorge to the fruitgrowing region around Cromwell, across Lake Dunstan and through Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and into the barren, dry, tussock grass of the MacKenzie High Country with its stunning scenery, and on to view New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook, itself at 12,349 feet above sea level. There will be time here for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier subject to the weather conditions on the day. (Please note that the scenic flight is not included in the tour costs.) Depart Mt Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and the canals of the Upper Waitaki Hydro-electric Power Scheme and on to Lake Tekapo with its unmistakable tourquise colour. Time to visit the small “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the shores of Lake Tekapo before descending Burkes Pass to Fairlie and across rolling hill country to the farming service centre of Geraldine, and then follow the long straight roads across the Canterbury Plains to the “Garden City” of Christchurch. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps for some last minute shopping for some souvenirs of your holiday to New Zealand.


DAY 13: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH:

Your arrangements conclude with a departure transfer by SIC to Christchurch Airport. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
