Classic New Zealand – 14 Days / 13 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Meet & greet on arrival at Christchurch International Airport.
Transfer by private vehicle to your hotel in the “Garden City”.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH / OAMARU / DUNEDIN:

Transfer to Dunedin today by SIC traveling south across the Canterbury Plains to Timaru via the farming servicing centre of Ashburton, and continue south following the east coast. Cross the Waitaki River and pass through the historic town of Oamaru and then on to Dunedin via Palmerston and Waikouiti. The rest of the day is at leisure.


DAY 03: DUNEDIN:

This morning you will enjoy a SIC city sightseeing tour including the First Church, the Octagon, Dunedin Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and the University of Otago. In the afternoon you will be taken on a 1/2 day SIC tour out along the Otago Peninsula following the harbour edge to the Royal Albatross Colony Visitors Centre. Later visit Natures Wonder to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins and then visit the grounds of Larnach Castle, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Return to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this lively student city.


DAY 04: DUNEDIN / TE ANAU:

Transfer from Dunedin to Te Anau by SIC on scheduled coach service. Travel south via the towns of Milton, Balclutha, Gore and Lumsden before crossing the Southland Plains to Te Anau on the shores of Lake Te Anau, and the gateway to the Fiordland National Park. Rest of the day at leisure to relax or perhaps this evening you may like to take an Optional tour to the Te Anau Caves. (Not included)


DAY 05: TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day SIC excursion to Milford Sound. Travel into the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. View waterfalls, seals, dolphins and maybe some penguins. Return to Queenstown afterwards.


DAY 06: QUEENSTOWN:

Free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs)


DAY 07: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH:

Transfer from Queenstown to Christchurch by SIC via the Kawarau Gorge and fruit growing area around Cromwell. Cross Lake Dunstan and climb over the Lindis Pass and into the MacKenzie High Country and on to New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook. Here there will be time for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier. (Optional scenic flight not included in tour costs.) Depart Mt Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and on to Lake Tekapo and the “Church of the Good Shepherd” before descending Burkes Pass to Fairlie and over rolling hill country to Geraldine, and across the flat Canterbury Plains to arrive at the “Garden City” of Christchurch in the late afternoon. Rest of the day at leisure to relax.  


DAY 08: CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA:

Transfer to Kaikoura by SIC this morning. Depart Christchurch and travel north through the sheep farming district of North Canterbury and follow the spectacular Kaikoura Coast to Kaikoura – famous for its whalewatching. Here you will enjoy a Whalewatch excursion and observe these huge mammals at close quarters from the safety of your cruise vessel. Transfer to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax and explore. Kaikoura is well known for its seafood. This evening you may like to visit a seafood restaurant for a crayfish.


DAY 09: KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON:

Transfer to Wellington by SIC this morning. Travel north along the Kaikoura Coast by Tranz Coastal Train via Blenheim in the heart of the wine growing region of Marlborough, famous for the Savignon Blanc and Chardonnay wines that are grown here and on to the town of Picton. Here you will board the Inter-Islander Ferry to the North Island. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queen Charlotte Sound as you cruise in the Marlborough Sounds and cross the Cook Strait to the natural harbour of the Capital City of Wellington. Transfer to hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.


DAY 10: WELLINGTON / TAUPO / ROTORUA:

Depart Wellington by SIC and travel north along the west coast of the North Island before heading inland and climbing up to the central volcanic plateau and passing alongside the Tongariro National Park, home to two of New Zealand’s active volcanoes, Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Follow the shoreline of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand and formed in an extinct volcanic crater, the size of the Republic of Singapore to arrive at Taupo at the northern end. Continue on following the Waikato River and travel through the exotic man-made pinus radiata forests of the Kaiangaroa before arriving at the “Thermal Spa Resort” of Rotorua in the late afternoon. Relax at leisure or perhaps soak in the thermal waters.


DAY 11: ROTORUA:

Enjoy a ½ day morning SIC sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers, and learn about Maori Culture. Also visit the Rainbow Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.) This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi and Concert at your hotel. 

DAY 12: ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND:

Transfer to Auckland by SIC via the world famous Waitomo Caves. Depart Rotorua and drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and through the lush green dairy farming region of the Waikato and arrive at Waitomo. Take a guided tour through the caves and continue on to Auckland following the Waikato River for part of the way. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the “City of Sails”.


DAY 13: AUCKLAND:

Enjoy a ½ day morning SIC sightseeing tour of the city including the Westhaven Yacht Marina, Parnell Village, Auckland Domain, and the volcanic crater of Mt Eden from the top of which you will get panoramic views across the sprawling "City of Sails" in all directions. This afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a harbour cruise, a visit to the Sky Tower, a ferry to the Victorian era suburb of Devonport with it many cafes, restaurants, and art & craft shops. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in tour costs.)


DAY 14: DEPART AUCKLAND:

Your arrangements conclude with a departure transfer by SIC to Auckland Airport. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
