East Coast Highlights – 11 Days / 10 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Meet & greet on arrival at Christchurch International Airport.
Transfer by private vehicle to your hotel in the “Garden City”.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH:

Enjoy a ½ day morning SIC sightseeing tour of the “Garden City”, including Cathedral Square, Christchurch Cathedral, Hagley Park, Canterbury Arts Centre, Botanical Gardens, Mona Vale, Christchurch Antarctic Centre, and a panoramic view from the Port Hills looking back over the city to the Canterbury Plains and the snow covered Southern Alps in the distance. Afternoon at leisure.

DAY 03: CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA:

Transfer from hotel to Christchurch Railway Station by SIC and board the Tranz Coastal Train for a scenic rail journey through the sheep farming region of North Canterbury and up the east coast to the fishing town of Kaikoura. Here you will enjoy a Whalewatch excursion and observe these huge mammals at close quarters from the safety of your cruise vessel. Transfer to your hotel afterwards. The rest of the day is at leisure. Kaikoura is famous for its seafood.


DAY 04: KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON:

Transfer to Wellington this morning by SIC traveling north along the Kaikoura Coast by Tranz Coastal Train via Blenheim to the township of Picton. Here you will board the Inter-Islander Ferry to the North Island. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queen Charlotte Sound in the Marlborough Sounds, before sailing across the open waters of the Cook Strait to the beautiful harbour city of Wellington. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and is home to the seat of power at Parliament Buildings as well as Te Papa - Museum of New Zealand. Transfer from the ferry to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the many bars and restaurants in Courteney Place, the entertainment area of Wellington, on your own.


DAY 05: WELLINGTON:

Enjoy a ½ day morning SIC sightseeing tour of the “Capital City” of Wellington, including Parliament Buildings, Wellington Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Oriental Bay, and a panoramic view from the top of Mount Victoria looking over the city and harbour to the Hutt Valley to the north, and south across the Cook Strait to the South Island and the Marlborough Sounds. Return to hotel afterwards. This afternoon is at leisure to explore on your own and to visit Te Papa – Museum of New Zealand.


DAY 06: WELLINGTON / NAPIER:

Travel from Wellington to Napier by SIC via the west coast of the North Island and through the Manawatu province. Pass through Palmerston North to the scenic Manawatu Gorge and into the Hawkes Bay province, a very productive farming region well known for its sheep farms, cropping, vineyards and orchards. Continue through the rural areas of Dannevirke, Waipukurau, and Te Aute, before arriving in the twin cities of Napier and Hastings. Check inot your hotel in the Art Deco city of Napier. The rest of the day at leisure to relax or perhaps take a walk around this fascinating city that was rebuilt in the 'Art Deco' architectural style of the 1930's after having been flattened by the 1931 Napier Earthquake.


DAY 07: NAPIER:

Today is a free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as a visit to the Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers or take an “Art Deco” Napier tour, or perhaps a vineyard wine tour. (Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs)


DAY 08: NAPIER / TAUPO / ROTORUA:

Transfer from Napier to Rotorua via Taupo by SIC. Travel north and then climb up to the higher altitude of the Central North Island arriving at Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand formed by an extinct volcanic crater, and about the same size as the island of the Republic of Singapore. Continue on to Rotorua crossing the Waikato River and the Wairakei Geothermal Valley and passing through part of the exotic forests of the large man made pinus radiata plantations of the Kaiangaroa Forest. Arrive at the “Thermal Spa” city of Rotorua in the late afternoon. Check in to hotel and the rest of day is at leisure. Enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi and Concert at hotel this evening.


DAY 09: ROTORUA:

Enjoy a ½ day morning SIC sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers and learn about Maori culture. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)

DAY 10: ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND:

Transfer to Auckland by SIC via the world famous Waitomo Caves. Depart Rotorua and drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and through the lush green dairy farming region of the Waikato province and arrive at Waitomo. Take a guided tour through the caves and continue on to Auckland follwing the Waikato River for part of the way. Check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps take a walk and explore the “City of Sails”on your own.


DAY 11: DEPART AUCKLAND:

Your arrangements conclude with a departure transfer by SIC to Auckland Airport. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
