West Coast Wonders – 08 Days / 07 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Meet & greet on arrival at Christchurch International Airport.
Transfer by private vehicle to your hotel in the “Garden City”.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH / GREYMOUTH:

Transfer from hotel to Christchurch Railway Station by SIC and board the Tranz Alpine Express for a scenic rail journey across the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth. This afternoon you will be taken on a ½ day SIC tour north along the West Coast to Punakaiki to see the “Pancake Rocks” and Blow Holes which are especially spectacular at high tide. Return to Greymouth and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or go for a walk around this small town built on the banks of the Grey River with its notorius bar at the entrance.


DAY 03: GREYMOUTH / FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER:

This morning is at leisure. Transfer from hotel to Greymouth Railway Station and board your coach for the journey to Franz Josef Glacier by SIC on scheduled coach. Travel via Hokitika, Ross and Harihari, passing several scenic lakes surrounded by native bush en route before arriving at Franz Josef. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.


DAY 04: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER:

This morning you will be taken on a ½ day guided glacier walk up onto the ice of the Franz Josef Glacier accompanied by experienced Alpine Guides who will explain the local flora and fauna as well as the geology of the glacier. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or perhaps take an Optional scenic helicopter flight over the glacier subject to the weather conditions on the day.(Please note that the Optional activities above are not included in tour cost.)


DAY 05: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN:

Transfer by SIC to Queenstown this morning traveling through the small settlements of Fox Glacier and Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bush clad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Travel past the small settlement of Makaroroa, opposite the Mount Aspiring National Park, and along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea before passing through the fruitgrowing area around Cromwell and through the Kawarau Gorge to picturesque Queenstown set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.


DAY 06: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day SIC excursion to Milford Sound. Travel alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. See waterfalls, seals, dolphins & perhaps some penguins. Return to Queenstown.


DAY 07: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH:

Depart Queenstown and travel by SIC on scheduled coach through the Kawarau Gorge to the fruitgrowing region of Cromwell and across Lake Dunstan, through barren Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and into the MacKenzie High Country and on to New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook. Here there will be time for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier, subject to the weather on the day. (Please note Optional scenic flight not included in tour cost.) Depart Mount Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and the canals of the Upper Waitaki Hydro-electric power scheme, past Mt John and on to Lake Tekapo and the “Church of the Good Shepherd” before descending Burkes Pass to Fairlie and across rolling hill country to Geraldine and across the Canterbury Plains to the “Garden City” of Christchurch. The rest of the day is at leisure.


DAY 08: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH:

Your arrangements conclude with a departure transfer by SIC to Christchurch Airport. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
