Includes self drive rental vehicle with pick-up on arrival at Christchurch Airport and drop-off on departure from Christchurch Airport, with a choice of 5 vehicle types, and a choice of 3 standards of hotel accommodation, with sightseeing and entrance fees as specified, and daily buffet breakfast at hotel. Daily departures throughout the year.

Best of the South – 08 Days / 07 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Pick-up self drive rental car on arrival at Christchurch International Airport.
Self drive from airport to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH / MOUNT COOK / DUNEDIN:

Check out of your hotel this morning. Self drive to Queenstown today traveling across the flat, patchwork quilt of the Canterbury Plains to the farming servicing centre of Geraldine and over gentle rolling hill country to Fairlie. Climb up through the Burke’s Pass to the MacKenzie High Country. Stop at the “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the shores of Lake Tekapo before following Lake Pukaki to the highest mountain in New Zealand – Mt Cook. Take in the stunning views and enjoy the mountain fresh air. There is time for an Optional scenic flight here subject to the weather on the day. (Please note that this Optional scenic flight is not included in the tour cost.) Continue via Twizel and Omarama and follow the Waitaki River to Oamaru on the coast and then on to Dunedin via Palmerston and Wakouiti. Arrive in the "Student City" of Dunedin  and check in to hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure.


DAY 03: DUNEDIN:

This morning you will enjoy aself drive city sightseeing tour including the First Church, the Octagon, Dunedin Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and the University of Otago. In the afternoon you wil drive out along the Otago Peninsula following the harbour edge to the Royal Albatross Colony Visitors Centre. Later visit Natures Wonders to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins and then visit Larnach Castle & grounds, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Return to your hotel afterwards. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this student city, renowned for its many cafes, bars and restaurants and plenty of atmosphere especially when the students are in residence.


DAY 04: DUNEDIN / TE ANAU:

Check out of your hotel this morning and self drive from Dunedin to Te Anau through South Otago. Travel South via the towns of Milton, Balclutha, Gore and Lumsden before crossing the Southland Plains to Te Anau on the shores of the lake, and the gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Arrive at your hotel in the afternoon and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or take a walk. This evening there is an Optional tour to the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)


DAY 05: TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound. Depart from Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Park and drive through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. Drive to Queenstown via Te Anau after the cruise and arrive at your hotel in Queenstown in the afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax.


DAY 06: QUEENSTOWN:

Free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note that Optional activities above not included in tour cost.)


DAY 07: QUEENSTOWN / CHRISTCHURCH:

Check out of your hotel this morning. Depart Queenstown and drive to Christchurch traveling through the rugged Kawarau Gorge and the fruit growing area around Cromwell. Drive across Lake Dunstan and on through Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and up into the MacKenzie High Country, through the settlement of Omarama and on to Lake Tekapo. Descend Burkes Pass to Fairlie and drive through gentle rolling hill country to the farming servicing centre of Geraldine, and then across the long, straight roads of the flat Canterbury Plains to the "Garden City" of Christchurch once again.


DAY 08: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH:

Your arrangements conclude today with the drop off of your rental car at Christchurch Airport prior to boarding your departure flight back home. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
