A choice of 5 categories of rental vehicle, daily departures and choice of 3, 4, 5 star hotel accommodation.

Includes self drive rental vehicle with pick-up on arrival at Christchurch Airport and drop-off at the Picton Ferry Terminal and pick-up again at the Wellington Ferry Terminal, with drop-off at Auckland Airport on departure, with a choice of 5 vehicle types, a choice of 3 standards of hotel accommodation, with sightseeing and entrance fees as specified, and daily buffet breakfast at hotel. Daily departures year round.

Classic New Zealand – 14 Days / 13 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive by rental vehicle to your hotel in the “Garden City” and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH / OAMARU / DUNEDIN:

Self drive from Christchurch to Dunedin today traveling south across the Canterbury Plains to Timaru via the farming servicing centre of Ashburton, and continue south following the east coast. Cross the Waitaki River and pass through the historic town of Oamaru and then on to Dunedin via Palmerston and Waikouiti. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or to explore this "Student City" on your own.


DAY 03: DUNEDIN:

This morning you will enjoy a self drive ½ day city sightseeing tour including the First Church, the Octagon, Dunedin Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and the University of Otago. In the afternoon, you can drive out along the scenic Otago Peninsula following the harbour edge to the Royal Albatross Colony. Later visit Natures Wonder to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins and then visit the grounds of Larnach Castle, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this lively student city.


DAY 04: DUNEDIN / TE ANAU:

Self drive from Dunedin to Te Anau this morning. Travel south via the towns of Milton, Balclutha, Gore and Lumsden before crossing the Southland Plains to Te Anau on the shores of Lake Te Anau, and the gateway to the Fiordland National Park. Rest of the day at leisure to relax or perhaps this evening you may like to take an Optional tour to the Te Anau Caves. (Not included)


DAY 05: TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound. Travel into the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. View waterfalls, seals, dolphins and maybe some penguins. Return to Queenstown afterwards via same scenic route by self drive rental vehicle.


DAY 06: QUEENSTOWN:

Free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs)


DAY 07: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH:

Depart Queenstown and self drive to Christchurch via the Kawarau Gorge and fruit growing area around Cromwell. Cross Lake Dunstan and climb over the Lindis Pass and into the MacKenzie High Country and on to New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook. Here there will be time for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier. (Optional scenic flight not included in tour costs.) Depart Mt Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and on to Lake Tekapo and the “Church of the Good Shepherd” before descending Burkes Pass to Fairlie and Geraldine, and drive across the Canterbury Plains to arrive at the “Garden City” of Christchurch in the late afternoon. Rest of the day at leisure to relax or explore on your own.  


DAY 08: CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA:

Self drive to Kaikoura this morning. Depart Christchurch and travel north through the sheep farming district of North Canterbury and follow the spectacular Kaikoura Coast to Kaikoura – famous for its whalewatching. Here you will enjoy a Whalewatch excursion and observe these huge mammals at close quarters from the safety of your cruise vessel. Drive to your hotel afterwards and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax and explore. Kaikoura is well known for its seafood. This evening you may like to visit a seafood restaurant for a crayfish.

DAY 09: KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON:

Travel to Wellington this morning. Drive north along the Kaikoura Coast by self drive rental vehicle via Blenheim in the heart of the wine growing region of Marlborough, famous for the Savignon Blanc and Chardonnay wines that are grown here and on to the town of Picton. Drop-off rental car on arrival at the Picton Ferry Terminal. Here you will board the Inter-Islander Ferry to the North Island. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queen Charlotte Sound as you cruise in the Marlborough Sounds and cross the Cook Strait to the natural harbour of the Capital City of Wellington. Pick-up another rental car on arrival at the Wellington Ferry Terminal. Drive to hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.


DAY 10: WELLINGTON / TAUPO / ROTORUA:

Depart Wellington and travel north along the west coast of the North Island before heading inland and climbing up to the central volcanic plateau and passing alongside the Tongariro National Park, home to two of New Zealand’s active volcanoes, Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Follow the shoreline of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand and formed in an extinct volcanic crater, the size of the Republic of Singapore to arrive at Taupo at the northern end. Continue on following the Waikato River via the spectacular Huka Falls and the Wairakei Geothermal Valley and travel through the exotic man-made pinus radiata forests of the Kaiangaroa before arriving at the “Thermal Spa Resort” of Rotorua in the late afternoon. Relax at leisure or perhaps soak in the thermal waters. This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi and Concert at hotel.


DAY 11: ROTORUA:

Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers, and learn about Maori Culture. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.) Or explore the many attractions around the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty region with your self drive rental vehicle. 

DAY 12: ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND:

Transfer to Auckland via the world famous Waitomo Caves. Depart Rotorua and drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and through the lush green dairy farming region of the Waikato via Cambridge and Otorohanga and arrive at Waitomo. Take a guided tour through the caves and continue on to Auckland afterwards following the Waikato River for part of the way. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the “City of Sails”.


DAY 13: AUCKLAND:

Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of the city including the Westhaven Yacht Marina, Parnell Village, Auckland Domain, and the volcanic crater of Mt Eden from the top of which you will get panoramic views across the sprawling "City of Sails" in all directions. This afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a harbour cruise, a visit to the Sky Tower, a ferry to the Victorian era suburb of Devonport with it many cafes, restaurants, and art & craft shops. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in tour costs.) Or for you to explore the many attractions, parks and beaches that abound in the Auckland region.


DAY 14: DEPART AUCKLAND:

Self drive from your hotel to Auckland International Airport and drop-off the rental vehicle. Your arrangements conclude today after you have dropped off the rental car. Check-in for your departure flight back home. We trust that you enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
