Includes self drive rental vehicle with pick-up on arrival at Christchurch Airport and drop-off at the Picton Ferry Terminal, with the pick-up of another self drive rental vehicle on arrival at the Wellington Ferry Terminal and drop off at Auckland Airport on departure, with a choice of 5 vehicle types, and a choice of 3 standards of hotel accommodation, with sightseeing and entrance fees as specified, and daily buffet breakfast at the hotel. East Coast Highlights – 11 Days / 10 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive by rental vehicle to your hotel in the “Garden City”. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH:

Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of the “Garden City”, including Cathedral Square, Christchurch Cathedral, Hagley Park, Canterbury Arts Centre, Botanical Gardens, Mona Vale, Christchurch Antarctic Centre, and a panoramic view from the Port Hills looking back over the city to the Canterbury Plains and the snow covered Southern Alps in the distance. Afternoon at leisure to explore on your own with rental car or relax.

DAY 03: CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA:

Check out of the hotel and self drive north to Kaikoura, travelling through the sheep farming region of North Canterbury and up the east coast to the fishing town of Kaikoura. Here you will enjoy a Whalewatch excursion and observe these huge mammals at close quarters from the safety of your cruise vessel. Self drive to your hotel afterwards. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own. Kaikoura is famous for its seafood, e.g. Crayfish.


DAY 04: KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON:

Depart Kaikoura and self drive along the Kaikoura Coast heading north towards to Blenheim, the centre of the Marlborough Province famous for the Savignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes that are grown in this area. Continue on to Picton and drop-off rental car before boarding the Inter-Island Ferry that will take you across the Cook Strait to Wellington. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queen Charlotte Sound in the Marlborough Sounds, before sailing across the open waters of the Cook Strait to the beautiful harbour city of Wellington. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and is home to the seat of power at Parliament Buildings as well as Te Papa - Museum of New Zealand. On arrival at the Wellington Ferry Terminal, pick-up another self drive rental car and self drive to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the many bars and restaurants in Courteney Place on your own - "the" entertainment precinct.


DAY 05: WELLINGTON:

Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of the “Capital City” of Wellington, including Parliament Buildings, Wellington Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Oriental Bay, and a panoramic view from the top of Mount Victoria looking over the city and harbour to the Hutt Valley to the north, and south across the Cook Strait to the South Island and the Marlborough Sounds. Return to hotel afterwards. This afternoon is at leisure to explore the Wellington region on your own by self drive rental vehicle and to perhaps visit Te Papa – Museum of New Zealand.


DAY 06: WELLINGTON / NAPIER:

Check-out of hotel and drive from Wellington to Napier via the scenic Kapiti region on the west coast of the North Island and through the Manawatu province. Pass through Palmerston North to the scenic Manawatu Gorge and into the Hawkes Bay province, a very productive farming region well known for its sheep farms, cropping, vineyards and orchards. Continue through the rural areas of Dannevirke, Waipukurau, and Te Aute, before arriving in the twin cities of Napier and Hastings. Check into your hotel in the Art Deco city of Napier. The rest of the day at leisure to relax or perhaps take a walk around this fascinating city that was rebuilt in the 'Art Deco' architectural style of the 1930's after having been flattened by the 1931 Napier Earthquake, or perhaps takes a drive to the vineyards, or Havelock North & Te Mata Peak.


DAY 07: NAPIER:

Today is a free day at leisure with your rental vehicle and an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as a visit to the Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers or take an “Art Deco” Napier tour, or perhaps a vineyard wine tour. (Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs)


DAY 08: NAPIER / TAUPO / ROTORUA:

Check out of hotel and self drive from Napier to Rotorua via Taupo. Travel north and then climb up to the higher altitude of the Central North Island arriving at Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand formed by an extinct volcanic crater, and about the same size as the island of the Republic of Singapore. Continue on to Rotorua crossing the Waikato River and visit the Huka Falls and the Wairakei Geothermal Valley before passing through part of the exotic forests of the large man made pinus radiata plantations of the Kaiangaroa Forest. Arrive at the “Thermal Spa” city of Rotorua in the late afternoon. Check in to hotel and the rest of day is at leisure. Enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi and Concert at hotel this evening.


DAY 09: ROTORUA:

Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers and learn about Maori culture. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools or exploring around the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty region by self drive rental car. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)

DAY 10: ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND:

Check-out of hotel and self drive to Auckland via the world famous Waitomo Caves. Depart Rotorua and drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and through the lush green dairy farming region of the Waikato province and arrive at Waitomo. Take a guided tour through the caves and continue on to Auckland follwing the Waikato River for part of the way. Check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps take a walk, or explore the “City of Sails”on your own with self drive rental car.


DAY 11: DEPART AUCKLAND:


Check out of hotel and self drive to Auckland International Airport. Your arrangements conclude today with the drop-off of your rental vehicle prior to boarding departure flight. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
