A choice of 5 categories of vehicle, daily departures and choice of 3, 4, 5 star hotel accommodation.

Includes self drive rental vehicle with pick-up on arrival at Christchurch Airport and drop-off at Picton Ferry Terminal, and pick-up again at Wellington Ferry Terminal and drop-off at Auckland Airport on departure, with a choice of 5 vehicle types, a choice of 3 standards of hotel accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees as specified, and daily buffet breakfast at the hotel. Daily departures year round.

Kiwi Adventure – 13 Days / 12 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive by rental vehicle to your hotel in the “Garden City” and relax at leisure or explore on your own.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH / GREYMOUTH / FRANZ JOSEF:

Check out of hotel and self drive across the Canterbury Plains via Darfield and climb over the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth. Stop for a break or have lunch before the continuation south to Franz Josef Glacier. Pass through the small settlements of Hokitika, Ross and Harihari and several beautiful lakes surrounded by native bush en route. Arrive at Franz Josef Glacier and check-in to the hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps go for a walk or take a short drive up to the glacier viewing point at the road end.


DAY 03: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER:

This morning you will be taken on a ½ day guided glacier walk onto the actual ice of the Franz Josef Glacier accompanied by experienced Alpine Guides who will explain the local flora and fauna as well as the geology of the glacier. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or perhaps take an Optional scenic helicopter flight over the glacier. (Please note that the Optional activities above are not included in the tour costs.)


DAY 04: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN:

Check-out of hotel and drive to Queenstown this morning traveling through the small settlements of Fox Glacier and Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bushclad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Travel past the small settlement of Makarora opposite the Mount Aspiring National Park and along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea before passing through the fruit growing area around Cromwell and through the scenic Kawarau Gorge to picturesque Queenstown set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Rest of day at leisure to explore on your own.


DAY 05: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound. Travel alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. View waterfalls, seals, dolphins and perhaps penguins. Return to Queenstown later in the afternoon via the same route.


DAY 06: QUEENSTOWN:

Free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own with self drive rental vehicle or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs)


DAY 07: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH:

Depart by self drive rental vehicle from Queenstown to Christchurch via the Kawarau Gorge and fruit growing area around Cromwell. Cross Lake Dunstan and through rugged Central Otago and climb up the Lindis Pass and into the MacKenzie High Country and on to New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook. There will be time here for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing. (Optional scenic flight not included in tour costs.) Depart Mt Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and on to Lake Tekapo and the “Church of the Good Shepherd” before descending Burkes Pass to Fairlie and Geraldine, and across the flat, straight roads of the Canterbury Plains to arrive at the “Garden City” of Christchurch in the late afternoon. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this very English of New Zealand's cities with the many parks and gardens on your own.  


DAY 08: CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA:

Self drive to Kaikoura this morning. Depart Christchurch and travel north through the sheep farming district of North Canterbury and follow the spectacular Kaikoura Coast to Kaikoura – famous for its whalewatching. Here you will enjoy a Whalewatch excursion and observe these huge mammals at close quarters from the safety of your cruise vessel. Drive to your hotel afterwards and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax and explore on your own. Kaikoura is well known for its many seafood restaurants and the local delicacy of fresh crayfish.


DAY 09: KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON:

Depart Kaikoura for Wellington this morning. Travel north along the Kaikoura Coast by self drive via Blenheim in the heart of the wine growing region of Marlborough, famous for the Savignon Blanc and Chardonnay wines that are grown here and on to the town of Picton. Drop-off rental vehicle on arrival at the Picton Ferry Terminal and board the Inter-Islander Ferry to the North Island. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queen Charlotte Sound as you cruise in the Marlborough Sounds and cross the Cook Strait and enter the natural harbour of the Capital City of Wellington. Pick-up another self drive rental vehicle on arrival and drive to the hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.


DAY 10: WELLINGTON / TAUPO / ROTORUA:

Depart Wellington and travel north along the west coast of the North Island before heading inland and climbing up to the central volcanic plateau and passing alongside the Tongariro National Park, home to two of New Zealand’s active volcanoes, Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Follow the shoreline of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand and formed in an extinct volcanic crater the size of the Republic of Singapore, to arrive at Taupo at the northern end. Continue on following the Waikato River via the spectacular Huka Falls and Wairakei Geothermal Valley and travel through the exotic man-made pinus radiata forests of the Kaiangaroa before arriving at the “Thermal Spa Resort” of Rotorua in the afternoon. This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi & Concert at hotel.


DAY 11: ROTORUA:

Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers and to learn about Maori Culture. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools. Or a chance to explore the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty region with the many attractions here. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)

DAY 12: ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND:

Self drive to Auckland via the world famous Waitomo Caves. Depart Rotorua and drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and through the lush green dairy farming region of the Waikato via Cambridge and Otorohanga and arrive at Waitomo. Take a guided tour through the caves and continue on to Auckland, following the Waikato River for part of the way. Arrive at your hotel and check-in. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the “City of Sails".


DAY 13: DEPART AUCKLAND:

Check out of hotel and self drive to Auckland International Airport and drop-off rental car. Your arrangements conclude today when rental car has been dropped-off at the airport.
