Includes self drive rental vehicle with pick-up on arrival at Christchurch Airport and drop-off on departure from Christchurch Airport, with a choice of 5 vehicle types, and a choice of 3 standards of hotel accommodation, with sightseeing and entrance fees as specified, and daily buffet breakfast at hotel. Daily departures throughout the year.

Scottish Flavours – 07 Days / 06 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH:

Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own with rental vehicle.


DAY 02: CHRISTCHURCH / MOUNT COOK / DUNEDIN:

Check out of the hotel this morning and self drive to Queenstown today traveling across the patchwork quilt of the Canterbury Plains to the farming servicing centre of Geraldine and drive over the gentle rolling hill country to Fairlie. Climb up through the Burke’s Pass to the MacKenzie High Country. Stop at the “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the shores of Lake Tekapo before following the shores of Lake Pukaki to the highest mountain in New Zealand – Mt Cook. Enjoy the stunning views and the fresh mountain air. There is time here for an Optional scenic flight subject to the weather on the day. (Please note that the Optional scenic flight is not included in the tour costs.) Continue via the townships of Twizel and Omarama and follow the Waitaki River to Oamaru and then head south to Dunedin via North Otago and settlements of Palmerston and Waikouiti. The rest of the day is at leisure.


DAY 03: DUNEDIN:

This morning you will enjoy a self drive city sightseeing tour including the First Church, the Octagon, Dunedin Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and the University of Otago. In the afternoon you will have time to drive out along the Otago Peninsula following the harbour edge to the Royal Albatross Colony Visitors Centre. Later visit Natures Wonders to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins and then visit Larnach Castle & Grounds, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Return to your hotel afterwards. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this lively student city.


DAY 04: DUNEDIN / QUEENSTOWN:

Check out of your hotel this morning. Today you will depart Dunedin and self drive across the Taieri Plains and follow the Clutha River through to Central Otago passing through the areas where the gold rush started in the 1860's to Alexandra, then following the Clutha River to Cromwell and through the rugged Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown, nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Check-in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax.


DAY 05: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound. Travel alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. Return to Queenstown afterwards.


DAY 06: QUEENSTOWN / CHRISTCHURCH:

Check out of your hotel this morning and self drive to Christchurch traveling through the Kawarau Gorge once more and the fruit growing area around Cromwell and across Lake Dunstan and through Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and up into the MacKenzie High Country, through the settlements of Omarama, Twizel and on to Lake Tekapo. Descend Burkes Pass to Fairlie and pass through gentle rolling hill country to the farming servicing centre of Geraldine, before reaching the long, flat, straight roads of the Canterbury Plains and arriving back in the "Garden City" of Christchurch. The rest of day is at leisure. 


DAY 07: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH:

Your arrangements conclude today with the drop-off of your rental car at Christchurch Airport prior to boarding your departure flight back home.
