A 13 day self drive itinerary covering the following places of interest in New Zealand including Auckland, Waitomo Caves, Rotorua, Taupo, Wellington, Picton, Christchurch, Greymouth, Franz Josef Glacier, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mt Cook, and Christchurch. Daily departures with a choice of 5 vehicle types and a choice of 3, 4, 5 star hotel accommodation.

Includes a self drive rental car with pick up on arrival at Auckland International Airport and for all touring and sightseeing with a choice of five vehicle types, a choice of three standards of hotel accommodation, sightseeing & entrance fees as specified, and daily buffet breakfast at hotel. Daily departures year round.

Town & Country – 13 Days / 12 Nights Itinerary Detail

DAY 01: ARRIVE AUCKLAND:

Pick up your self drive rental car on arrival at Auckland International Airport. Transfer by self drive rental car to your hotel in the “City of Sails”. The rest of the day is at leisure.


DAY 02: AUCKLAND / WAITOMO / ROTORUA:

Depart Auckland this morning and travel south along the motorway to the Bombay Hills and desend into the lush, green, dairy farming region of the Waikato Province, following the Waikato River for part of the way and on to the world famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. Take a guided tour through the Waitomo Glow worm caves and view staligmites, staligmites and thousands of tiny glow worms. Continue on to Rotorua via the prosperous town of Cambridge, well known for the many thoroughbred horse studs in the area which have produced some of the top race horses. Drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and arrive at the “Thermal Spa City” of Rotorua in the late afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or to go for an Optional soak in the thermal waters of the Polynesian Spa. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.) Enjoy a Maori Hangi & Concert this evening.


DAY 03: ROTORUA:

Today enjoy a self drive morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers and to learn about Maori culture. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. Return to your hotel. This afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a soak in a hot pool, a 4WD safari to Mt Tarawera, a scenic flight, a visit to the Museum, or perhaps wander around the city centre and do some shopping, or maybe you would prefer to explore the surrounding region and take a drive to Te Puke or to Whakatane on the East Coast. (Please note that Optional activities mentioned above are not included in the tour costs.)


DAY 04: ROTORUA / TAUPO:

Check out of your hotel this morning and drive from Rotorua to Taupo passing through some of the main forestry areas in the North Island, the Kaiangaroa Pinus Radiata Forest, with sightseeing en route including a visit to the Huka Falls on the Waikato River and to the Wairakei Geothermal Valley. Here there are a number of Optional activities such as a Jet boat ride on the Waikato River, Bungy Jumping, a visit to the Prawn farm or a visit to the "Mountains of the Moon". Arrive at Taupo township situated on the lake shore at the northern end of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand and the same size as the island of the Republic of Singapore. Lake Taupo is a large extinct volcanic crater and site of one of the largest explosions on earth. Check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure for relaxing or exploring on your own. (Optional activities not included in tour costs.)


DAY 05: TAUPO / WELLINGTON:

Check out of your hotel and depart Taupo for Wellington. Drive south along the eastern shores of Lake Taupo before climbing over the Central Volcanic Plateau and passing by the Tongariro National Park, home to the active volcanoes of Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Continue on via Waiouru, Taihape and Bulls and follow the west coast of the North Island south to the "Capital City" of Wellington. Check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to relax or explore this vibrant city on your own. The main restaurant and entertainment area is very centrally located in Courtenay Place and also nearby to the Waterfront which is also very popular in the evenings.


DAY 06: WELLINGTON:

This morning enjoy a self drive sightseeing tour of the “Capital City” including the Parliament Buildings, Wellington Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Oriental Bay and a panoramic view from the top of Mount Victoria overlooking the city and harbour towards the Hutt Valley to the North, and South out across Wellington Airport to Cook Strait and the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island in the distance. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or perhaps to visit Te Papa – The Museum of New Zealand, or take a ride on the Kelburn Cable Car. (Optional costs not included in tour costs.)


DAY 07: WELLINGTON / PICTON / CHRISTCHURCH:

This morning check out of your hotel and drive from your hotel to the Wellington Ferry Terminal and drop off your rental car before boarding the Inter-Island ferry to Picton in the South Island. Sail out of Wellington Harbour and into the Cook Strait and across to the Marlborough Sounds. Cruise through the scenic Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton. Pick up another rental car on arrival at Picton and drive to Christchurch via the wine growing region of Marlborough, Kaikoura and the picturesque Kaikoura Coast. Arrive in the "Garden City" of Christchurch in the early evening and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps to explore some of the many bars and restaurants in the central city area.


DAY 08: CHRISTCHURCH / GREYMOUTH / FOX GLACIER:

Check out of your hotel and drive across the flat Canterbury Plains to the foothills of the Southern Alps. Climb over the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth. Time for a break here for lunch and to wander around the shops before the continuation of your journey south to Franz Josef Glacier. Pass through the small settlements of Hokitika, Ross and Hari Hari and several beautiful lakes surrounded by native bush en route before arriving at Franz Josef Glacier and then on to Fox Glacier. Check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps take a walk to the Westland National Park Visitor Centre and learn more about the glaciers which dominate this region of the South Island, or maybe take a short drive up to view the terminal face of the Fox Glacier and walk closer for a great view of the glacier. 


DAY 09: FOX GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN:

Check out of your hotel and drive south to Queenstown this morning following the coastline and traveling through the small settlement of Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bush clad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Enter the Otago Province and on to the small settlement of Makarora opposite the boundary of the Mount Aspiring National Park. Follow the shores of Lakes Wanaka & Hawea before passing the fruitgrowing area around Cromwell and drive on through the scenic Kawarau Gorge to picturesque Queenstown nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or to take a walk around the centre of Queenstown and check out the many bars, cafes and restaurants.


DAY 10: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN:

Full day excursion to Milford Sound. Drive alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with a gradient of 1:10, and view stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. View waterfalls, dolphins, seals, and maybe a few penguins as well as the stunning scenery. Return to Queenstown and arrive in the early evening. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax, or perhaps take a walk around the town centre with its many bars, cafes and restaurants to chose from.


DAY 11: QUEENSTOWN:

Today is a free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as Jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, luge, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. (Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.) Enjoy your time in beautiful Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand.


DAY 12: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH:

Check out of your hotel and depart Queenstown this morning and drive through the Kawarau Gorge to the fruitgrowing region around Cromwell again, then across Lake Dunstan and through Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and into the barren, dry, tussock grass of the MacKenzie High Country with its stunning scenery, and on to view New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook, itself at 12,349 feet above sea level. There will be time here for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier subject to the weather conditions on the day. (Please note that the scenic flight is not included in the tour costs.) Depart Mt Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and the canals of the Upper Waitaki Hydro-electric Power Scheme and on to Lake Tekapo with its unmistakable tourquise colour. Time to visit the small “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the shores of Lake Tekapo before descending Burkes Pass to Fairlie and across rolling hill country to the farming service centre of Geraldine, and then follow the long straight roads across the Canterbury Plains to the “Garden City” of Christchurch. Check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps for some last minute shopping for some souvenirs of your holiday to New Zealand.


DAY 13: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH:
