New Zealand lies in the South Pacific Ocean between latitudes 34°S and 47°S.

It is approximately 6,500 miles (10,400 kilometres) south west of North America and 1,400 miles (2,250 kilometres) east of Australia.

New Zealand is a long, narrow country lying roughly north-south. It consists of the North and South Islands and many small islands. The land area covers 268,000 km², about the size of great Britian, Colorado or Japan.

New Zealand, [Auckland] is the closest main population centre to many of the Pacific Islands and is an international gateway to most of the islands of the South Pacific via air. Auckland is the largest Polynesian city in the world, being home to around 18 ethnic Polynesian cultures.
